BG Mathers Limited, a Scottish haulage company founded in 1968, has entered liquidation after nearly 60 years of operation. All seven staff members have lost their jobs as the firm succumbed to what it described as "difficult conditions."
Relentless Challenges and Rising Costs
The company said it faced a "relentless series of challenges" in recent years, including rising costs, which ultimately forced its closure. Colin Mathers, director and son of the founder, told The National: "For years, our team has poured everything into keeping our wheels turning, but we have ultimately been overwhelmed by a relentless series of challenges."
He added: "In this industry, we are used to navigating tough times, but recently it has felt like one thing after another. We are far from alone in this struggle, with around 400 UK road haulage and freight companies closing in 2025 alone."
Financial Pressures and Industry Impact
Mr Mathers cited "skyrocketing fuel costs, soaring insurance premiums, mounting compliance burdens and the rising costs involved in vehicle maintenance" as key factors behind the closure. The company, founded by Vic Mathers, offered vehicle inspections and repairs alongside its haulage services.
Expressing gratitude, Mr Mathers said: "I want to express my deepest gratitude to our loyal staff, our dedicated drivers and our wonderful clients who stood by us. This is a very difficult outcome for us and our team, but the economic reality left us with no other choice."
Liquidation Process Underway
Michael Reid, head of insolvency services in Scotland at MHA, has been appointed as liquidator. Mr Reid told the outlet: "BG Mathers is a further example of a business facing significant pressures, unfortunately resulting in job losses. Our priority is to work with stakeholders to manage the process as smoothly as possible."
