Aston Villa are preparing to submit a bid for Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser, according to French outlet L'Equipe. The Premier League club are seeking a replacement for Emiliano Martinez, who has reached an agreement to join Juventus following Argentina's World Cup campaign.
Martinez's Departure
Martinez has been with Aston Villa for six years after joining from Arsenal in a £17 million deal in 2020. He played a key role in helping Unai Emery's side win the Europa League last season. The Argentina international had previously come close to leaving Villa Park last year, with Manchester United showing interest.
In May, Martinez left the door open for a move, stating: 'Sometimes football can change, managers can come in and go. In football people move around the place. It doesn't mean that I don't have full respect for the club. I have a commitment with Aston Villa. I am a World Cup winner with Aston Villa. I have won two Golden Gloves with Aston Villa. I will always and forever love this club.'
Risser's Profile
Risser, 21, joined Lens from Strasbourg for €3 million (£2.5 million) last summer and has only been with the club for one season. Despite his short tenure, he was awarded Goalkeeper of the Year in Ligue 1 in May and was named in the division's Team of the Season.
Risser is currently with France's squad for their World Cup campaign but is third choice behind Mike Maignan and Brice Samba.
Villa's Interest
According to L'Equipe, Villa have been monitoring Risser's progress in Ligue 1 'for several months' and are now planning to launch an offer. However, Lens are keen to retain the young goalkeeper.
