Abandoned Welsh Village Home Frozen in Time Hits Auction at £35,000
Abandoned Welsh Village Home Auctioned for £35,000

A village in the Rhymney Valley of south Wales, once home to around 600 residents, was abandoned in the 1980s due to fears of a 'moving mountain'. Today, only a few remnants remain, including a lone house that is now going to auction.

The History of Troedrhiwfuwch

The village of Troedrhiwfuwch was established in the 1850s to house workers from local mines. At its peak, it boasted around 100 terraced properties, a school, a church, shops, and pubs. However, concerns grew that the mountain behind the village was unstable, raising fears of a disaster similar to the 1966 Aberfan landslide that killed 144 people.

In 1985, residents were relocated, and most of the village was demolished. Yet, two properties survived: the former post office and a cottage on Chapel Street. The cottage, number 2 Lawrence Terrace, is now being sold via auction.

The Surviving Property

The three-bedroom house remains furnished, with personal items still inside, offering a haunting glimpse into the past. Sean Roper of Paul Fosh Auctions described it as a 'unique sale' that provides a connection to a vanished community. The property includes two reception rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, three upstairs bedrooms, a rear yard with outbuildings, and a front garden. It also features gas central heating (not tested) and partial uPVC double glazing.

The home is surrounded by stunning valley and mountain views. The auction house estimates that after renovation, it could generate rental income of up to £900 per month.
