UK Car Sales Surge in February: Best Performance Since 2020
UK car sales surge 14% in February

The UK automotive market showed strong signs of recovery in February, with new car registrations rising by 14% compared to the same period last year. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), this marks the best February performance since 2020, before the pandemic disrupted supply chains.

Electric Vehicle Growth Slows

While the overall market grew, demand for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) increased by just 21.8%, a significant slowdown from previous years. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), however, saw a stronger rise of 12.1%, suggesting shifting consumer preferences.

Industry Calls for Government Support

SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes urged the government to stimulate EV adoption through incentives, stating: "The upcoming Budget is a crucial opportunity to introduce measures that will make EVs more accessible to all buyers." The industry body also highlighted the need for improved charging infrastructure.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, John Lewis Partnership announced plans to expand its electric vehicle charging network across Waitrose stores, supporting the transition to greener transport.
