A coin expert has urged Britons to check their change for a rare 20p coin minted in 2008 that could be worth up to £80. The coin, which appears ordinary at first glance, features a unique error: it has no date.
The undated 20p is the result of a die mix-up at the Royal Mint, where an older heads side design was accidentally paired with a new tails side design, omitting the date entirely. Fewer than 250,000 of these coins were produced out of over 136 million minted that year.
Known as the 'holy grail' of UK coin collecting, the undated 20p is highly sought after. The Royal Mint has confirmed it is the first time in over 300 years that a coin entered circulation without a date. Despite the error, the coins remain legal tender with a face value of 20p.
Coin collecting enthusiast The Coin Collecting Wizard shared on TikTok that the coin can sell for around £50 on eBay, with some recent sales reaching £79.99. He advised: 'Always make sure to check those 20p coins.'
