The National Lottery Lotto draw on Wednesday, May 20, offered an £8.3 million jackpot. The draw, which takes place every Wednesday and Saturday, costs £2 per play. In addition to the chance of winning cash, playing the Lotto raises around £30 million each week for UK good causes.
Since its first draw on November 19, 1994, the UK National Lottery has distributed funds beyond its winners. Approximately half of all ticket sales go towards prizes, while 28% supports good causes. The remainder is split between government duty (12%), retailers (5%), and the operator (5%).
The Thunderball draw also took place, offering a top prize of £500,000. The winning Thunderball numbers were: 1, 15, 23, 25, and 30. The winning Lotto numbers were: 9, 20, 24, 51, 52, and 59.
Over the years, the lottery has produced remarkable wins. The biggest Lotto prize came in April 2016, when a single anonymous ticket-holder won £35 million. Just months earlier, in January 2016, two players each claimed £33 million. Last month, a syndicate of retired Port Talbot Tata Steel workers won a life-changing £1 million playing EuroMillions via the National Lottery app.
