Manchester United's summer transfer business has focused almost exclusively on midfield so far, but plans are taking shape elsewhere, including on the left wing. That position has been a priority since the final weeks of the Ruben Amorim reign. United had conversations with Antoine Semenyo in December about a future role on the left, but Semenyo signed for Manchester City instead in a £62.5 million deal.
Interest in Other Targets Fades
During January, the plan remained to target the left wing in the summer, something manager Michael Carrick hinted at in early March, saying it was "definitely something to look at." In early 2026, Yan Diomande was a player of interest, but the 19-year-old's stock rose and RB Leipzig placed a price tag of over £100 million on him. Diomande wants to move to Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
United are also long-term admirers of Morgan Rogers but made no attempt to rival Chelsea for his signature before they agreed a £117 million deal. They considered a bid for Crysencio Summerville as well, but Roma have had two offers rejected by West Ham, with no indication United will rival the Serie A side for the 24-year-old.
Rashford's Situation Key
The chances of a senior left-wing signing at Old Trafford this summer are receding, with two key reasons. First, Marcus Rashford's situation. The 28-year-old is enjoying a post-World Cup break but will return to pre-season training around August 10, when Carrick's side embarks on a short training camp in Ireland. Rashford will be available for selection. As it stands, a move away from his boyhood club appears slim. Both sides have made conciliatory noises, and the door appears shut on a move to Barcelona. Rashford has little interest in moving to a Premier League club without Champions League football.
If he stays, Carrick will have three left-wingers at his disposal. Patrick Dorgu played there only three times under Carrick last season but made a considerable impression and said he was ready to make that position his own. Matheus Cunha offers a different profile and played on the left when Dorgu missed four months with a hamstring injury.
Youngster Thompson Added
With Dorgu, Cunha, and Rashford available, and without the financial boost of selling Rashford and his £325,000-a-week wages, there is little chance of signing a senior left-winger. However, United have spent up to £8 million on 18-year-old left-winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham, with half up front and half in add-ons dependent on first-team progress. Thompson scored seven goals in seven UEFA Youth League games last season and is highly rated. Part of the attraction of moving to United is a pathway to the first team, as was the case for Ayden Heaven when he signed from Arsenal in January 2025.
Thompson is expected to train with the first team this summer and will get opportunities in pre-season. Signing another left-winger would block his route. As it stands, the youngster will compete with Dorgu, Cunha, and Rashford next season, and unless something changes in Rashford's situation, that is unlikely to change.
