Manchester United's latest rebuild is gaining momentum as decision-makers at Old Trafford aim to strengthen the squad this summer. Michael Carrick is understood to be close to securing Atalanta midfielder Ederson, though it seems the deal has been delayed following his recent selection for Brazil's World Cup 2026 squad.
He's far from the only target they're pursuing, however, as rumours intensify on multiple fronts. The World Cup is expected to cause hold-ups while players focus on their international commitments but that doesn't leave United completely powerless. In fact, there are developments unfolding on various fronts as two namesakes feature in some of this week's most significant stories. MEN Sport has rounded up some of the key developments emerging from Old Trafford today, so you don't have to.
Mateus Fernandes new plan emerges
The first Fernandes in today's headlines is West Ham midfielder Mateus, though his path to Old Trafford may have become more complex. That's following Florentino Perez securing re-election as Real Madrid president on Sunday, meaning Jose Mourinho is poised to assume control of the Bernabeu once more. As a direct consequence, it is reported Los Blancos will pursue West Ham's Fernandes as a priority reinforcement this summer. That could prove troublesome for United given the appeal of Real Madrid is notoriously difficult to resist.
With Perez's presidency secured and Mourinho set for a return, Real can now press ahead with their summer overhaul in earnest. Perez has pledged that marquee signings will follow after a barren campaign in the Spanish capital.
Fernandes, 21, will not come at a bargain price, with the Hammers reportedly placing an £80million price tag on their prized asset. However, their relegation from the Premier League significantly undermines their negotiating position. That hands United a potential advantage as they may look to simply outspend their rivals in the race for Fernandes. Nevertheless, the player himself may hold considerable sway over his ultimate destination by the time the summer transfer window draws to a close.
West Ham splashed out just over £40m to bring Fernandes to the club from Southampton last year. Yet it appears increasingly probable that several of Europe's elite clubs will look to lure him into another move just 12 months on.
Bruno rallies behind United target Leao
United skipper Bruno Fernandes has backed reported target Rafael Leao following his recent sending-off controversy. AC Milan winger Leao was issued a straight red card for striking the face of Chile's Ivan Roman in Portugal's friendly fixture ahead of the World Cup.
"Regarding my sending off, I simply wanted to protect my teammate and never intended to hurt the opponent," wrote Leao in an Instagram update following the incident. "Thank you to all the Portuguese fans who were at Jamor; the atmosphere was incredible. We move forward together."
Some captains might be inclined to criticise the player for leaving his side vulnerable in high-pressure circumstances. Yet United skipper Fernandes adopted the opposite approach with his reaction. Responding to Leao's post, the United talisman simply wrote "Together." And that alone seemed to capture how the Portugal veteran is supporting his countryman despite certain scrutiny implying Leao ought to have displayed greater composure.
Leao, 26, is widely anticipated to depart the San Siro following a challenging campaign with Milan. And the forward has virtually confirmed he'll be pursuing fresh opportunities after admitting the nature of Serie A perhaps no longer complements him. "I need a new challenge," he recently told Sport TV. "In Italy, the league is evolving, but for my style of football, the Premier League or La Liga would better showcase my talent and me as a player. If the opportunity in the Premier League were to come my way, I would be very happy: I think I would be able to match my talent with players who are at a very high level."
