A survey of 2,000 adults reveals that two thirds of Brits would consider taking a train for journeys such as London to Glasgow or Aberdeen to Manchester, while only 13% would opt for flying. The research, conducted by transport consultancy Steer and commissioned by the Rail Delivery Group, is part of the 'Clearing the Air' report comparing rail and domestic air travel across seven key GB routes.
Cost and Time Comparisons
According to the data, a train journey between London and Manchester cost an average £45 in 2025, though passengers expected it to be £88. In contrast, a flight between the two cities cost £115, before extras like seats and luggage. Including additional costs, transfers, and airport changes, flying costs 71% more on average than rail. Passengers saved an average of £147 per journey by choosing the train.
For the London–Newcastle route, travellers can save an average of an hour by train compared to flying. A business traveller making this journey weekly would gain the equivalent of a full working day each month.
Productivity and Environmental Benefits
More than half (54%) of respondents believe trains offer more choice and flexibility than flying, and are more reliable. 61% consider trains better for the environment. The report estimates that 93% of a rail journey can be spent working, reading, relaxing, or staying connected, versus 33% of a domestic flight journey when check-in, security, and boarding time are considered. Thus, train passengers gain an average of three hours more usable time per journey.

The research coincides with the Government's Great British Summer Savings scheme, offering a temporary VAT reduction on eligible family attractions and days out to help households get more value from leisure trips across Great Britain this summer.
