The BMW 2 Series has been named the best coupe currently on sale in the United Kingdom by respected motoring publication Auto Express, beating out models from Porsche, Ferrari, and Bentley. The rear-wheel-drive 2 Series was praised for offering strong value for money, lithe handling, and an outstanding interior.
Top Three Coupes Revealed
Auto Express compiled its list of the best three coupes available in the UK, with the BMW 2 Series taking top spot. The publication noted that while the car has costly optional extras, limited space, and a compact boot, its overall package is unbeatable. The review concluded: 'Sometimes less really is more, and you don't need to look further than the BMW 2 Series for proof. That means the baby BMW handles with real poise and driver involvement, yet it also offers grown-up refinement and an interior that's a cut above for quality and tech.'
Honda Prelude Ranks Second
In second place came the recently relaunched Honda Prelude, now available as a hybrid. The updated model earned plaudits for its excellent chassis, capable hybrid system, and impressive overall efficiency. However, it dropped points for lacklustre acceleration off the line, cramped rear seats, and notable tyre noise at motorway speeds.
Ford Mustang Takes Third
Third place went to the Ford Mustang, which has only recently become available in right-hand drive for British motorists. Auto Express praised its legendary image, brilliant styling, and punchy V8 engine. On the downside, it was marked down for an old-fashioned interior, high running costs, and elevated vehicle emissions. Alex Ingram, the publication's former chief reviewer, said: 'For all its ability as a driver's car, the Mustang's credentials as a long-distance cruiser manage to exceed even those high standards.'
Expert Commentary on the Winner
A previous review of the BMW M2, the 2 Series' bigger brother, compared it to classic muscle cars. The reviewer noted: 'In essence, the M2 Coupe is a reimagining of the great American muscle cars from the 1960s and 1970s, soulful two-door leviathans that still capture the imagination. Like those Challengers, Camaros, Mustangs, and Firebirds of the 1970s I believe the M2 Coupe will still be remembered, used and cherished in 50 years’ time. If this car is an example of anything it is that when the petrol car dies people will be able to smile that it happened as well as cry that it’s over.'
