Woodward Aircraft Engine Systems has submitted a planning application for a 1,900 square metre extension to its existing facility at Shawfarm Road, Prestwick, Ayrshire. The proposal, which includes additional manufacturing, testing, storage and office space, represents a "significant investment" according to planning documents.
Extension Details and Design
The extension will be built on the southern side of the current operational facility and will feature a portal-framed structure with an overall building height of 7.8 metres above finished ground level. The design includes a new feature entrance aligned with the Southern access road, along with new offices, meeting rooms, sanitary and welfare facilities spread over two levels. Associated parking, circulation space, servicing and landscaping works are also part of the proposal.
Glasgow-based agents Graham + Sibbald are handling the application. The design and access statement notes that the extension has been designed to integrate with the existing facility while providing a "contemporary and high-quality architectural response" appropriate to its prominent position within the industrial estate and the wider Prestwick Aerospace and Freeport area.
Supporting Local Growth
The proposal forms part of the continued development and investment in the Prestwick aerospace sector and will support the ongoing expansion of a significant local employer. The statement adds: "The proposed extension at Woodward Aircraft Engine Systems represents a significant investment in the continued growth of aerospace manufacturing activities within Prestwick." The development is expected to enhance the appearance of the site through a contemporary entrance feature, improved landscaping and well-considered access arrangements.
Connections to the proposed Southern access road, currently subject to a separate planning application (Reference 25/00769/APP), are also included in the plans.
Decision Pending
The exact cost of the extension has not been disclosed, but planning papers describe it as a significant investment. A decision on the proposals is expected in due course.
