The target of the raid was a plant operated by SMART Alabama, LLC, a key supplier for the automotive giant Hyundai. Federal authorities confirmed the detention of approximately 50 individuals suspected of working in the United States illegally.
Inside the Federal Investigation
The operation was the culmination of a thorough, long-term investigation into the company's hiring practices. ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) executed a federal search warrant, meticulously processing employees on site.
"HSI is committed to protecting the integrity of the nation's lawful immigration system and safeguarding the homeland," a spokesperson stated, emphasising the agency's focus on holding employers accountable who knowingly break federal law.
