British Steel is recruiting more than 40 apprentices across its Scunthorpe, Teesside and Skinningrove sites, with applications for the 2027 intake now open. The company is offering fully funded training and a route to permanent employment as part of its push to develop the next generation of steelmakers.
The new positions follow a commitment to early careers development this year, with 70 apprentices welcomed across the firm's sites in September. Alongside the apprenticeship roles, several graduate positions are also available, offering multiple pathways into a long-term engineering career within the business.
Roles and Locations
The positions commence in early September 2027 and include 24 roles at Scunthorpe, comprising 12 electrical apprenticeships and 12 mechanical apprenticeships. The Northern Mills at Teesside and Skinningrove are offering a further eight electrical and eight mechanical apprenticeships respectively.
British Steel's apprenticeship scheme blends practical, hands-on experience with fully funded training and nationally recognised qualifications, enabling recruits to earn a wage while developing their skills. Successful applicants will initially undertake specialist training before transitioning into operational areas of the business, where they will work with seasoned colleagues to build the expertise required to support steelmaking operations.
Requirements and Benefits
Those applying for the apprenticeship programme will require a minimum of three GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, including Maths, English and Science, alongside a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a genuine willingness to learn.
Apprentices will benefit from a competitive package, comprising 35 days' holiday, including bank holidays, a company pension scheme, a health cash plan, an Employee Assistance Programme, all necessary safety clothing and access to discounts at local businesses. British Steel's intention is to offer permanent employment upon successful completion of the programme.
Application Deadlines
The deadline for apprenticeship applications is 8 March 2027, while graduate applications must be submitted by 26 February 2027. British Steel is additionally recruiting graduates in 2027 for positions in manufacturing operations, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and materials engineering. Further details regarding graduate opportunities across other areas of the business are anticipated to be announced in the coming weeks.
Nick Ashton, HR Director at British Steel, said: "The steel industry offers a huge variety of career opportunities, and we're committed to helping people develop the skills and confidence they need to build successful and rewarding careers." He added that investing in future talent is essential to the long-term success of the business, and that many colleagues began their careers through apprenticeship and graduate programmes before going on to hold key roles across the organisation.
