UK home insurance premiums fell 9% in the year to January 2026, but policyholders on older deals may still be paying more than necessary. The average annual cost of home insurance dropped to £198, with Greater London and Scotland seeing the largest regional decreases of 13% and 11% respectively, according to data from Compare the Market.
Combined Premiums Show Mixed Trends
The average combined buildings and contents premium fell to £375 in the first quarter of 2026, down 5% on a year earlier, according to the Association of British Insurers’ Property Insurance Premium Tracker. This suggests that homeowners whose policies renew automatically each year might be missing out on an opportunity to reduce their monthly outgoings.
However, the latest ABI figures also show a small 2% rise in combined policy premiums to £383 compared with the year before, indicating that the period of falling costs may not last.
Switching Providers to Cut Costs
Switching insurance providers is one way to lower premiums. Mirror Switch & Save, powered by Quotezone, allows customers to compare quotes from over 40 insurers in a few minutes. The tool connects users to a comparison platform featuring a panel of UK insurance providers, and after answering a few questions, users receive a tailored selection of quotes. If a policy looks suitable, customers can review coverage and exclusions before buying directly from the provider.
Most insurance companies only offer quotes up to 30 days in advance, and potential savings can be significant. Mirror Switch & Save states that 51% of consumers could save £257.05 on their home building and contents insurance, based on representative cost savings from April 2026.
Why Act Now
The push to switch comes amid economic uncertainty. Following October’s autumn budget, the Institute for Fiscal Studies described the outlook for household income growth as “depressing”. Director Helen Miller warned: “This decade looks set to be the worst decade for growth in household incomes on record. No amount of temporary cost of living packages will fix that.”
The Office for Budget Responsibility has also labeled the financial landscape ahead for Britons as “pretty grim”. While global economic factors cannot be controlled, households can control what they pay for bills. Auto-renewals are frequently more expensive than quotes for new customers, and with overall industry costs ticking upward, a competing insurer might offer a lower rate. Other reasons to consider switching include better coverage options, improved customer service, and changed personal circumstances such as reduced driving mileage or improved home security.
