Holiday Hire Car Photo Tip Could Save You Thousands

Holidaymakers could save hundreds of pounds and avoid significant stress by taking one simple step before driving away in a rental car: photograph the vehicle. Research by iCarhireinsurance.com reveals that almost half of hire car motorists worry they will be blamed for damage they did not cause, potentially facing a hefty bill upon return. One in ten drivers felt they had been unfairly charged for damage.

Pre-Existing Damage Often Missed

More than a third of drivers who inspected their rental vehicle before driving discovered damage that was not recorded on the check-out sheet. Ben Wooltorton, motoring expert at iCarhireinsurance.com, said a few quick photos could prevent a costly argument later. “When a scratch on a car can cost £600 to fix, taking a few minutes to photograph your hire car could save a huge amount of stress and expense.”

Rental Companies May Downplay Damage

More than a quarter of drivers said rental companies told them minor damage did not need to be recorded. However, scratches, dents, and scuffs can still lead to charges later. Only 15% of drivers said they trusted rental companies to accurately record existing damage.

Growing Awareness Among Travellers

Many travellers are getting clued up: more than six in ten now take photographs when collecting the vehicle and again when returning it. A third also record video evidence. Wooltorton advised: “Drivers should always inspect vehicles carefully and take time-stamped photos or video footage before leaving the rental depot and again when returning the vehicle.” He also recommended checking the excess amount payable if the car is damaged or stolen.

Excess Charges Can Be Substantial

Drivers can face large excess charges if a hire car is damaged or stolen. These can exceed £2,000, even if the incident was not their fault. On arrival, hire car firms often try to sell “collision damage waiver” insurance at the desk. Excess protection bought directly from a rental company costs an average of £246 for a week’s standard excess, tyre, and windscreen cover. Standalone policies from specialist providers bought online may cost a fraction of that, but drivers should check what is included before buying.
