RAC Reveals 10 Cheapest Cars to Insure for New Drivers in 2026
Cheapest Cars to Insure for New Drivers in 2026

Passing the driving test is a major milestone, but the financial journey is just beginning for new motorists. The cost of car insurance, a legal necessity, often presents a steep hurdle, particularly for young and inexperienced drivers.

The Insurance Burden for New Drivers

A recent study by the RAC underscores the scale of the challenge. It found that 44% of drivers aged 17 to 24 identify car insurance as their top financial concern. This anxiety is compounded by industry-wide premium increases, with data from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) showing that nine out of ten motorists have seen their costs rise over the past year.

Young drivers are typically viewed as a higher risk by insurers due to their lack of experience, which can translate into significantly more expensive quotes. However, the RAC has issued new guidance, pinpointing the single most effective strategy for cutting this substantial expense.

Choosing the Right Car is Key

According to the RAC's experts, selecting an appropriate vehicle is the "most effective" method for a new driver to lower their insurance premium. The cost is heavily influenced by the car's insurance group, a system managed by the ABI. Cars in the lowest groups are generally the cheapest to insure.

"Cars in low insurance groups tend to be small, affordable and have low-powered engines," the RAC notes, "though that isn't always the case as a couple of surprises in this list reveal."

Beyond the car itself, the RAC advises new policyholders to consider other factors. Where you live and, crucially, where you park your car overnight can impact your quote. Parking in a garage, rather than on the street, can lead to savings. Installing additional security equipment to deter theft may also help reduce the premium.

The RAC's 2026 Shortlist for Affordable Insurance

Compiled based on quoted insurance groups, the following list highlights the new cars expected to be among the cheapest to insure in 2026. The RAC stresses this is a guide, as final costs will vary depending on individual circumstances and specific vehicle details.

  • Hyundai i10
  • Volkswagen Polo
  • Skoda Fabia
  • Kia Picanto
  • Toyota Aygo X
  • VW Caddy
  • Fiat 500
  • Dacia Sandero
  • Renault Clio
  • Seat Arona

For novice drivers facing the daunting cost of getting on the road, strategic choices—starting with the car itself—offer a clear path to making motoring more affordable. This list provides a crucial starting point for those looking to manage their budgets without compromising on legal cover.
