A new survey of 2,000 drivers has revealed that 61% have had their plans ruined by car problems, with one in twenty missing a loved one's wedding. The research, commissioned by Vixa, a car health assistant from The AA, found that other casualties include cancelled holidays (5%), missed flights (4%), and job interviews (4%).
Family gatherings (11%), day trips (8%), and hospital appointments (6%) also featured among events missed due to car issues. The most common problems were flat tyres or punctures (52%), battery failures (39%), and engine warning lights (28%).
Summer emerged as the worst season for car trouble, with 30% of motorists relying on their vehicle most during this period. Over 10% experienced overheating engines, while 9% suffered a complete tyre blowout. Nearly half of those affected felt frustrated (49%) and stressed (46%), with 14% left embarrassed.
Matt Barker from Vixa said: 'With summer upon us, many of us depend on our cars to enjoy holidays, share day trips or head to important events. Sometimes problems seem to come out of nowhere – leading to disappointment and frustration.' He recommended using a car health assistant and performing regular maintenance checks.
The study also found that a quarter of motorists have declined invitations due to lack of trust in their vehicle, and 20% blamed 'making do' with ageing cars. Meanwhile, 18% admitted to lacking understanding of car maintenance and ignoring unusual sounds.
