Aldi Cheapest UK Supermarket, Saving £66 vs Waitrose

Aldi has been named the cheapest supermarket in the UK for June 2026, according to consumer group Which?. The budget retailer's basket of 95 items cost £163.34, undercutting rival Lidl by £1.58. Lidl's total was £164.92, but with the Lidl Plus rewards app, it dropped to £164.79, just £1.45 more than Aldi.

Loyalty Cards Create Price Gaps

The Which? survey also highlighted the impact of loyalty schemes. Sainsbury's Nectar card deals reduced its total to £193.30, undercutting Tesco's Clubcard price of £194.67. However, shoppers without a loyalty card at Sainsbury's faced a bill of £203.83, one of the most expensive. Asda held fourth place at £190.39, while Morrisons (£198.53) was cheaper than standard prices at Tesco (£200.63) and Sainsbury's.

Waitrose Remains Most Expensive

Waitrose was the priciest supermarket at £229.88, a staggering 40.73% more than Aldi for identical items. The basket included a mix of own-brand and branded products such as Birds Eye peas, Cathedral City cheddar, and Kellogg's corn flakes.

Expert Advice

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, said: "While inflation remains stable for now, many households will be worried about prices going up in the coming months. The discounters remain the cheapest supermarkets for everyday essentials, while at the larger supermarkets the massive gap between member and non-member prices shows that retailers are increasingly locking their best value away behind a digital wall." She added: "When walking into one supermarket over another – or forgetting your loyalty card – can mean paying over 40% more for basically the same everyday essentials, switching where you shop is still the fastest way to slash your weekly grocery bill."
