Manchester United are closing in on their first summer signing, with Atalanta midfielder Ederson expected to join the club. However, the Brazilian may have to compromise on his preferred shirt number, as his usual digits are already taken at Old Trafford.
Ederson has worn the number 13 shirt at Fortaleza, Salernitana and Atalanta, but that number is currently held by United defender Patrick Dorgu. The number 15, which he wore at Corinthians and Cruzeiro, is also unavailable, belonging to Leny Yoro.
One option that remains open is the number 40, which Ederson wore at the start of his career and is currently vacant at United. The 26-year-old will need to discuss the matter with his future teammates once the transfer is finalised.
Atalanta boss Raffaele Palladino confirmed last month that Ederson is on his way out, saying: 'Ederson out? It was a decision we agreed with the boy because there’s something going on in the transfer market. The fact that such a player is being followed by such a big club should be a source of pride.'
United manager Carrick has also commented on the club's transfer plans, emphasising the need for any new signing to help the team progress. 'As a football club, you want to keep moving forward,' he said. 'There's obviously work to do.'
