Wales will experience a partial solar eclipse for the first time in nearly three decades, with the phenomenon set to be the most visible eclipse across the UK and Ireland since 1999. In Cardiff, the moon is forecast to obscure 93.24% of the sun at 7.13pm on Wednesday, with clear skies expected.
Another partial eclipse with this level of coverage won't occur until 2050. The eclipse will be observable from 6.13pm to 8.06pm, reaching its peak shortly before 7.15pm.
High viewpoints for unobstructed views
As the 2026 eclipse occurs late in the evening, the ideal vantage point is somewhere offering an unobstructed view of the west-northwest horizon. Mynydd y Garth, or Garth Hill, above the villages of Pentyrch and Gwaelod-y-Garth on the outskirts of Cardiff, is one high point that should offer a clear view as the eclipse peaks shortly after 7pm. On a clear day, the summit provides views over Taffs Well, Cardiff, and even Somerset in the distance.
Caerphilly mountain offers another high viewpoint with views over Caerphilly and Cardiff. The popular Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar will be open until 8.30pm for the partial eclipse. The mountain is around a 30-minute drive from the city centre.
Waterfront and park options
For those seeking a spot nearer the city centre, Cardiff Bay and the Barrage offer wide-open views across the water with few buildings blocking the horizon. Lo Lounge will be open from 5pm for a viewing event, with tables and viewing glasses on a first-come, first-served basis. People are asked to arrive early as stock is limited.
Penarth Seafront is another option for views across the water. Grangemoor Park in Grangetown offers panoramic views over the south of the city. Pontcanna Fields, a huge open green space, is one of the easiest places to find a clear view of the evening sky. Roath Recreation and Bute Park in the heart of the city also provide large open spaces for viewing.
Barry Island event
Around a 30-minute drive away, Barry Island offers views off the coast. With the eclipse peaking at around 7.15pm, the fairground will be open, with the potential to view the partial eclipse from the big wheel. Barry Astronomical Society will host an event at Friar's Point from 6pm, with solar-safe binoculars and telescopes available and over 400 pairs of solar eclipse glasses handed out for free.
