Wrexham's tongue-in-cheek social media jibe at Liverpool backfired when the Empire State Building's social media page confirmed the red lighting was for Liverpool's new away kit, not the Welsh side.
The Awkward Exchange
Ahead of their pre-season friendly at Yankee Stadium, Liverpool shared a photo of the Empire State Building lit up in red, writing: "The Empire State Building is lit up for the Reds." Wrexham's social media team responded: "I think this might have been for us..." with an eyes emoji.
However, the Empire State Building Observation Deck page on X had already stated the lighting celebrated the reveal of Liverpool's away kit for the 2026/27 campaign. Liverpool fans mocked Wrexham's post, with one saying: "If you made it to the Prem, potentially." Another wrote: "You should be thankful you play Liverpool," while a third shared the building's confirmation and added: "So this is awkward."
Wrexham's Strong Pre-Season
Despite the social media misstep, Wrexham have impressed in pre-season. They beat Manchester United 1-0 in Helsinki and followed up with a 3-2 victory over Leeds United in Tampa, Florida.
Ryan Reynolds, co-owner of Wrexham, spoke about the upcoming match against Liverpool. "We're not only coming to America to play again, in what has always been the most exhilarating and exciting thing to see live, but to do it with three Premier League teams in a row in Tampa, New York and Philly is pretty amazing," he said.
Excitement for the Yankee Stadium Clash
Reynolds added: "You know, to have to play to host Liverpool in Yankee Stadium - with that kind of history and pedigree - I just don't know what to make of it. We cannot wait to fill that stadium, and watch the boys out there just do what they do best."
He noted Wrexham's history of giant killings: "I mean, it's always so electric and, you know, the 165-year plus history of Wrexham has seen its fair share of giant killings. Liverpool is as big as it gets, certainly on the world stage. So we're very excited to see what we can do."
