Hundreds of estates across Wales are yet to be claimed, according to UK Government figures that show most Welsh counties have at least one unclaimed estate on record. When someone dies without leaving a will, authorities assess whether a rightful heir comes forward to claim their inheritance. If nobody comes forward, those assets could ultimately be transferred to the UK Government's treasury.
Time limits and proof required
Following a person's death there is a 12-year timeframe to claim an estate containing money, or 30 years for other types of assets. To establish entitlement, claimants must present a family tree proving their relationship to the deceased person.
When someone dies without a valid or effective will, known as dying intestate, the following parties are entitled to inherit the estate in this order: husband, wife, or civil partner; children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so on; mother or father; brothers or sisters who share both the same mother and father or their children (nieces and nephews); half-brothers or sisters or their children (nieces and nephews of the half-blood or their children), where 'half' means they share only one parent with the deceased; grandparents; uncles and aunts or their children (first cousins or their descendants); and half-uncles and aunts or their children (first cousins of the half blood or their children), where 'half' means they only share one grandparent with the deceased, not both.
Register of unclaimed estates in Wales
The UK Government regularly updates a register of these unclaimed estates listing information including the deceased person's name, dates of birth and death, and their place of death. However, because of inconsistent data entry practices over the decades, organising records by local authority can prove difficult.
