Match Highlights
Just 11 minutes in, a nightmare start for Cameron Burgess and the Socceroos when the central defender bundled the ball into his own net after Folarin Balogun’s cross. The goal delighted the USA fans, both in the stadium and at the Fan Zone on the National Mall in Washington DC.
Late in the first half, Alex Freeman ran on to a deflected shot and headed it in. Celebrations were delayed due to an offside check by the VAR. There were two US players in an offside position … but Freeman wasn’t one of them. The US substitutes ran alongside Freeman to celebrate.
Fan Reactions
Fans from both sides seemed to have put the confected hostility behind them. Home fans watched the match at Union Station in Los Angeles, California, while in Sydney, despite it being in the early hours, fans watched on large screens. Plenty of early birds were out in Melbourne too.
A bit of food-based banter from the US fans was matched by the Australians, who equalised in the food banter match.
Celebrity and Ceremony
Paris Hilton checked out the stadium before leading the USA pre-game chants. Socceroos fans in gold could be seen in the crowd during a military helicopter fly past before the anthems. USA players joined in with the Star-Spangled Banner, and Tete Yengi reacted after the Australian national anthem.
On-Field Action
Weston McKennie went close with a header. Jacob Italiano of Australia tackled Folarin Balogun. Aiden O’Neill whipped in a corner as the Socceroos tried to get back on terms. The co-hosts contained Australia in the second half. Harry Souttar of Australia and Folarin Balogun of the USA exchanged opinions.

The final whistle brought contrasting emotions. USMNT players showed their appreciation to their fans.
