New state pensioners are in line for a boost of nearly £539 a year, based on the latest Triple Lock forecasts.
The Triple Lock forecasts currently show the benefit is set to increase by 4.8% next year, while Consumer Price Index figures for March to May 2026 dictate a 4.3% increase. However, these are not the final figures used to calculate the wage-growth element, which will be taken from May to July data and released in September.
Triple Lock commitment
Under the Triple Lock, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) must raise the state pension each year by the highest of inflation, wage growth, or 2.5%. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has already committed to the Triple Lock for the Budget in October, fulfilling a Labour manifesto promise.
The new state pension was introduced in 2016 and applies to all men born after April 5, 1951 and women born after April 5, 1953. If the current 4.3% figure remains, a full new state pension with a complete National Insurance record would rise by £539.54 a year.
What the increase means
The full new post-2016 state pension is currently £12,547.60 a year, or £241.30 a week. A 4.3% rise would add about £539 per year, taking weekly payments to roughly £251.67 and the annual total to £13,086.84, based on calculations by Express.
Older state pensioners would receive the same 4.3% increase, but on a smaller starting amount, currently £184.90 a week. They may also be able to claim additional schemes such as the Second State Pension or SERPS, which are not available to younger pensioners.
Potential change
The absolute minimum rise possible is £313.69, representing the 2.5% floor. If wage growth drops in the next three-month period, the calculation would reduce, but if it increases, the Triple Lock would rise higher.
