For months, Marcus Rashford looked set to turn his loan spell at Barcelona into a permanent move, but those hopes have now definitively ended. The Manchester United forward spent the 2025/26 season in Catalonia, where he delivered 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances. Barcelona, however, were unable to reach an agreement with United and instead completed a £70million deal for Anthony Gordon, ending Rashford's chances of staying at the club.
Flick pays tribute to Rashford
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick acknowledged Rashford's departure on Friday, admitting the player will be missed despite the arrival of Gordon.
"What I can say about Marcus is that I appreciate a lot to work with him," Flick said. "Sometimes you don't know what's going to happen with players on loan... our situation wasn't easy. But I appreciated working with him a lot. He's a fantastic player, a fantastic person. The team misses him, I will miss him. But it's life. It's what we have to accept. Anthony Gordon has come in... and he's on fire with Barca. I'm really happy he's now with us."
Villa return also closes
Rashford had another escape route at Aston Villa, where he impressed during the second half of the 2024/25 campaign on loan. He delivered several influential performances under Unai Emery and later thanked the club on social media, writing: "everyone here at Villa for what has (injury aside) been an incredible few months for me." He added: "It is a really special club and I appreciated the way Villa fans embraced me with open arms from 1st minute on the pitch."
That option has also evaporated. Villa sealed a loan deal for Chelsea winger and Rashford's former United team-mate Alejandro Garnacho last month, meaning they no longer need to fill his position.
Limbo at United
With both preferred destinations off the table, the 28-year-old is in limbo. Michael Carrick is believed to be willing to reintegrate him into the Manchester United squad, but after the club significantly strengthened its attacking options last summer, there is no guarantee Rashford would reclaim a regular starting place.
Other opportunities may still arise. Tottenham have tracked the England international for some time and could view him as the proven goalscorer they need after missing out on Randal Kolo Muani, who is expected to join Juventus. Chelsea could also emerge as contenders, with Liam Delap enduring a difficult first season at Stamford Bridge and Xabi Alonso's side short of reliable attacking output beyond Joao Pedro. Although Chelsea already have plenty of forward options - and former United striker Danny Welbeck is reportedly close to joining - Rashford's experience could make him an attractive addition.
Neither club has made a formal move, however, leaving Rashford in a state of uncertainty. With Barcelona gone, Villa off the table and United no longer guaranteeing him a starring role, he is running out of places to turn - and running out of time to find his next chapter.
