Newsboy, the leading tipster, has unveiled his selections for the second day of Glorious Goodwood, featuring eight races including the Group 1 Sussex Stakes. Here are his tips for each contest.
1.50 Coral Rewards Shaker Handicap
Newsboy picks Cannes, trained by Joseph O’Brien. The colt was disappointing as the 7-2 favourite at Royal Ascot, finishing 14th behind stablemate Enceladus. However, the race was not run at a strong gallop, favouring those closer to the pace, while Cannes was held up at the rear. He remains on a mark of 95 and is expected to improve. Others to consider are Hatteen, Infraad and Parisian Scholar. Newsboy’s 1-2-3: 1 Cannes, 2 Hatteen, 3 Parisian Scholar.
2.25 British Stallion Studs EBF Alice Keppel Fillies' Conditions Stakes
Wild Blossom, trained by Karl Burke, is the selection. She made a striking debut at Carlisle in May, winning a five-furlong novice by 10 lengths. In the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot she finished 10th, but was on the unfavoured far side. Dropping to conditions company, she can return to winning ways. Fast Track, Zigazig Ah and Hidden Gift are respected. Newsboy’s 1-2-3: 1 Wild Blossom, 2 Fast Track, 3 Hidden Gift.
5.00 Rolls-Royce Oak Tree Stakes
Zanthos, trained by Simon and Ed Crisford, gets the vote. A Group 2 winner as a juvenile in the Rockfel Stakes, she has struggled this season, finishing ninth in the French 1000 Guineas and 16th in the Commonwealth Cup. Back at seven furlongs on fast ground and wearing a tongue strap, she can exploit a drop to Group 3 level. Flora Of Bermuda, Planet Seeker and Radiant Beauty are dangers. Newsboy’s 1-2-3: 1 Zanthos, 2 Flora Of Bermuda, 3 Planet Seeker.
3.35 Veuve Clicquot Molecomb Stakes
Adonius is the pick for trainer Rebecca Menzies, who has her first runner at Goodwood. The gelding is unbeaten in three starts, including a win at Chester’s May meeting under Kaiya Fraser. He was kept away from Royal Ascot and his front-running style should suit this track. Pershaada, Ruler’s Pride and El Floridita are noted. Newsboy’s 1-2-3: 1 Adonius, 2 Pershaada, 3 El Floridita.
4.10 Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes
Bow Echo, trained by George Boughey, is fancied to extend his unbeaten record. The Night Of Thunder colt won the 2000 Guineas by two and three-quarter lengths from Gstaad, then confirmed superiority by a short head in the St James’s Palace Stakes. He raced keenly last time but Boughey believes Goodwood’s contours will suit. Gstaad, Opera Ballo and Never So Brave are among the opposition. Newsboy’s 1-2-3: 1 Bow Echo, 2 Gstaad, 3 Opera Ballo.
5.00 Coral Charlton Handicap
Under The Twilight, trained by Michael Blake, is tipped. She was narrowly beaten at this meeting last year and recently scored at Windsor 16 days ago from a mark of 73. Now 5lb higher at 78, that is still 4lb below her losing mark of 12 months ago. Velvet Rhythm, French Affair and Calling A Star are others to note. Newsboy’s 1-2-3: 1 Under The Twilight, 2 Velvet Rhythm, 3 Calling A Star.
5.40 HKJC World Pool Handicap
Goldmoyne, trained by James Owen, is the selection. The six-year-old has won six of 19 starts for Owen, most recently on Lingfield’s Polytrack in March. He has placed in five of seven subsequent runs, including a close second at Newmarket and a third at York. With jockey Mason Paetel’s 5lb claim, he looks well treated. Bobby Bennu, Crimson Spirit and Zarathos are shortlisted. Newsboy’s 1-2-3: 1 Goldmoyne, 2 Bobby Bennu, 3 Zarathos.
