A mechanic has declared that a 20-year-old Mk1 Ford Focus is among the most dependable second-hand cars available in the UK. Paul Lucas, who owns one himself, claims that the vehicle's simple, no-frills design makes it exceptionally reliable.
Lucas bought his Mk1 Ford Focus 16 years ago for £500 and says it has never let him down thanks to careful maintenance. He told the Daily Mail: 'For me, a 20-year-old 1.6 litre Mk1 Ford Focus is top for reliability. It was designed before all the unnecessary bells and whistles came in.'
The Mk1 Ford Focus remains affordable, with a 2001 model on Autotrader listed at £795 with 91,500 miles. Other motoring enthusiasts also praise the car, with one blogger calling it 'one of the most appealing and cost-effective cars you can buy' and noting its exceptional driving quality.
However, not all experts agree on the most reliable used car. William Fletcher, CEO of car.co.uk, favours the Toyota Yaris, citing its proven engineering, low repair costs, and extended warranty. Meanwhile, electric vehicles are also gaining accolades, but journalist Christopher Sharp noted one minor niggle after test-driving the 'EV Car of the Year'.
