Bruno Fernandes is pushing for a new contract that would place him among Manchester United's top earners, as the captain seeks clarity on the club's long-term vision and managerial future before considering a potential transfer. Sources indicate Fernandes feels undervalued on his current £220,000-a-week deal, which runs until 2026 with an option for a further year.
The 29-year-old wants to join the highest pay bracket alongside Marcus Rashford (approx. £365,000/week), Casemiro, and Jadon Sancho (approx. £300,000/week). Fernandes, who turns 30 in September, is conscious that his next contract should be the most lucrative of his career. His agent, Miguel Pinho, has held discussions with potential suitors, including Bayern Munich and Barcelona, though Barcelona's financial constraints make them an unlikely destination.
United's hierarchy, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, views Fernandes as the team's best player and is not actively seeking to sell him. However, the need to generate funds and reduce the wage bill to invest in the squad may force the club to consider realistic offers. The club is also due to clarify the future of manager Erik ten Hag, and Fernandes wants to know who would replace him if the Dutchman is sacked.
Fernandes has publicly stated his desire to stay but stressed that the club's ambitions must match his own. 'I don't want to leave. This has always been my ultimate dream. I just want my expectations to fit with the expectations of the club,' he told the Players' Tribune. Since joining in January 2020, he has won only the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, while United finished eighth last season—their lowest Premier League finish—and will compete in the Europa League next term.
To strengthen the squad, United must sell players and reinvest the proceeds due to profitability and sustainability rules. Alongside Fernandes, Rashford (contracted until 2028) is of high potential value, while Sancho, Casemiro, and Harry Maguire could also depart. The only players considered not for sale are Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo, Rasmus Højlund, and likely Lisandro Martínez.
