LIV Golf has postponed its New Orleans tournament scheduled for June, less than two weeks after chief executive Scott O’Neil confirmed that the 2026 season would proceed as planned. The decision comes amid reports that the Saudi-funded circuit’s financing was at risk.
Tuesday’s announcement followed a day of speculation, with sources indicating that the event might be moved due to concerns over the football World Cup affecting attendances and viewership, alongside issues such as high temperatures and course condition.
Louisiana governor Jeff Landry and economic development secretary Susan Bourgeois said in a joint statement that the state had already paid $3.2m under its contract with LIV Golf, of which $2m had been invested in upgrades for the Bayou Oaks at City Park course. They stated that the circuit was expected to return the remaining $1.2m in state incentive funds.
According to the statement, Bourgeois spoke with O’Neil last Friday and was informed that LIV was seeking to postpone the New Orleans event to explore a potential date in autumn. LIV Golf said the move was a strategic decision to avoid the peak summer heat and the crowded global sports calendar, while ensuring the course would be in championship condition.
“We are grateful for the continued partnership and flexibility of the state of Louisiana as we work together to deliver a world-class debut this fall,” LIV Golf said. The organisation added that it is focused on maintaining momentum for the 2026 season and expects to finalise dates soon.
