HSBC clarifies extra checks for secondary accounts

HSBC has clarified its policy on opening secondary accounts after a customer expressed frustration on social media. The customer wanted to open a new account but was told they could not do so online because they already held a product with the bank.

The bank responded apologetically, stating: 'To open a secondary account, we would need to complete some additional checks.' It advised the customer to contact its customer services team on 03457 404 404, available Monday to Sunday from 8am to 8pm.

The customer remained dissatisfied, asking: 'Can't it all be done online like all other banks?' HSBC reiterated that the process required speaking with an agent and invited the customer to send a direct message to resolve the matter.

Eligibility requires a qualifying annual salary of £100,000 or more, or depositing and maintaining £100,000 or more in savings or investments with HSBC UK throughout the qualifying period. The payment is made within 70 days after all criteria are met, provided the account remains open.
