HMRC has filed a petition seeking to have Liverpool Football Club legend and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher declared bankrupt over an unpaid tax bill. Court listings filed yesterday show the case was brought against James Lee Duncan Carragher by a solicitor acting for HMRC, the UK government department responsible for tax collection.

Court listings show the case was listed for yesterday, August 27, with Mr Carragher named as a litigant in person. The ECHO contacted HMRC and was told the department does not comment on individual cases.
Carragher's Liverpool career
Jamie Carragher is one of Liverpool's most recognisable former players, having made 737 appearances for the Reds. He is ranked as the club's second-highest appearance maker behind Ian Callaghan. The defender won a Champions League, two FA Cups, three League Cups and a Uefa Cup during his career at Anfield.
Since retiring, the Bootle-born star has become one of the most high-profile football pundits, working for Sky Sports and other broadcasters like CBS. He also appears regularly on the football podcast Stick to Football.
HMRC statement
A spokesperson said: “We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans. We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort.”
