HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued an apology following a significant technical failure that forced its telephone helplines offline for several hours on Thursday, just over two weeks before the critical self-assessment tax deadline.
Helpline Blackout During Critical Period
The revenue body confirmed that a short-lived technical issue caused all its helpline services to close at 11.40am on Thursday 15 January 2026. The lines remained inaccessible to the public until they were finally restored by 2.15pm the same day.
An HMRC spokesperson stated: “We’ve now reopened our helplines – including for self-assessment. We thank people for their patience and are sorry for the inconvenience.” The authority once again encouraged taxpayers to use its online digital services where possible to manage their affairs.
Mounting Pressure as Deadline Looms
The disruption could not have come at a worse time for millions, with the annual self-assessment deadline of 31 January fast approaching. Missing this date triggers an initial automatic penalty of £100, with further charges accruing over time.
Official figures released by HMRC on 5 January revealed the scale of the task remaining. While more than 6.36 million taxpayers had already filed their returns, nearly 5.65 million people still needed to complete their forms before the month's end.
Consumer Advocates Voice Concern
The timing of the outage drew sharp criticism from consumer rights experts. Jenny Ross, Editor of Which? Money, said: “With the self-assessment tax deadline rapidly approaching, it’s hugely concerning to see that HMRC’s phone lines have gone down. This will be hugely frustrating to those needing help with their tax returns, and particularly disruptive to those unable to use digital services.”
HMRC has previously advised that anyone who believes they will be unable to submit their return by 31 January should contact the department before the deadline to explain their situation. The body has stated it will consider reasonable excuses fairly and may waive penalties accordingly.
