HMRC has confirmed that Child Benefit payments due over the August bank holidays will be adjusted, with delayed or early payments depending on the claimant's location.
Child Benefit is typically paid every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday. The monthly amount for the eldest or only child is £108.20, equivalent to £27.05 per week. For each additional child, families receive £17.90 per week.
Scotland Bank Holiday Adjustments
In Scotland, where the Summer Bank Holiday falls on Monday, August 3, payment dates will move back by one day. Those due to receive Child Benefit on August 3 will be paid on Tuesday, August 4, while payments scheduled for August 4 will arrive on Wednesday, August 5.
Rest of UK Bank Holiday Changes
For the rest of the UK, the Summer Bank Holiday on Monday, August 31 triggers early payments. Claimants due to receive Child Benefit on that date will be paid on Friday, August 28 instead.
Normal Schedule Resumes
The changes apply only to the affected dates, with the usual payment schedule resuming afterwards. Claimants can check their normal payment dates through their HMRC online account or previous statements.
Eligibility and High Income Charge
Child Benefit is available to those responsible for a child under 16 and living in the UK. Payments can continue until the child turns 20 if they remain in approved education or training.
However, if the claimant or their partner earns over £60,000, they may need to repay part of the benefit through the High Income Child Benefit Charge. The charge recovers 1% of the benefit for every £200 earned over the threshold. For example, an adjusted net income of £62,000 would require repayment of 10% of the benefit. Those earning £80,000 or more must repay the full amount. High earners can choose to either receive payments and pay the tax charge or opt out.
