Gabriel Langton has been spotted for the first time since his horror fall at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The England gymnast fell skull-first from around three metres high after failing to catch the bar on the horizontal metal bar event.
Teammates create own medal ceremony
Langton's teammates gave him his own medal ceremony after he was unable to stand on the podium with them. The silver medallists reunited with Langton at the team hotel in Glasgow, where the whole team applauded him and placed his silver medal around his neck.
Langton was a late inclusion in the team, replacing Max Whitlock. His debut Commonwealth Games was terrifyingly close to disaster, but he was cleared of any serious injury and discharged from hospital on Saturday, July 20.
Team England statement
A statement from Team England read: “Gabriel was transferred to the hospital as a precautionary measure overnight and underwent multiple scans today, with very positive results. Thankfully, he has been cleared of any serious injury complications and will be discharged to return to the team hotel this evening.”
The statement added: “He is in good spirits and hugely grateful for the many messages of support and the excellent care provided by the medical teams. He is looking forward to being reunited with the team to celebrate his silver medal.”
Teammate's reaction
Luke Whitehouse, the first Team England gymnast to compete after the fall, said: "It was really tough. We just had to reset, try to put it to one side mentally and focus on the job we had to do. I think everyone should be proud of the way we carried on after Gabe's fall."
He added: "The togetherness of the team really showed, and I couldn't be prouder of everyone. We got in a huddle and knew we had a job to do for him. Perhaps silver is not the medal we wanted, but I'm still very proud of this team."
