Phil Foden has committed his future to Manchester City by signing a new four-year contract, with an additional 12-month option that keeps him at the club until 2030. The 26-year-old, who joined City as an eight-year-old, is now the club's most decorated player with 17 major honours.
“Committing my future to City means everything to me,” Foden said. “Playing for this club is all I’ve ever wanted to do. It’s not lost on me that I’ve been lucky enough to be part of a historic period with so many titles won, but we’re always looking to the future and trying to win more.”
Foden is relishing the opportunity to work again with new manager Enzo Maresca, who served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant during the 2022-23 treble-winning campaign. “He was brilliant during the treble season – someone all the players respected and loved working with,” Foden added. “I can’t wait to work with him again.”
Despite his glittering trophy collection, including six Premier Leagues and a Champions League, Foden’s form has dipped since winning individual accolades in 2023-24. He lost his starting place under Guardiola and was omitted from England’s World Cup squad. After a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest on 4 March last season, he started only two league games and was substituted early in the FA Cup semi-final.
Hugo Viana, City’s director of football, praised Foden’s dedication. “He is a unique talent and his creativity is a joy to watch,” Viana said. “None of what he has achieved would be possible without the focus, dedication and humility to work hard.” Foden expressed hope that Maresca’s possession-based style will help him reach the next level.
