Trump Condemns UK-California Clean Energy Partnership

Former US President Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on a newly signed clean energy agreement between UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and California Governor Gavin Newsom. The deal, formalised on Monday at the Foreign Office in London, aims to strengthen transatlantic cooperation on climate action, renewable energy development, and environmental protection.

"Inappropriate" International Engagement

In comments to Politico, Trump criticised the bilateral arrangement, using his derogatory nickname for Governor Newsom and questioning the appropriateness of state-level international agreements. "The UK's got enough trouble without getting involved with Gavin Newscum," Trump stated, adding that "Gavin is a loser" whose environmental policies have been disastrous for California.

The memorandum of understanding represents the twelfth such agreement between the United Kingdom and individual US states, following similar partnerships with Washington and Florida. The accord establishes a framework for boosting transatlantic investment, strengthening research collaborations, supporting clean energy businesses accessing the Californian market, and sharing expertise on nature protection and climate resilience.

Diverging Climate Approaches

The UK-California partnership exists separately from British efforts to find common ground on energy with the Trump administration, which has rolled back federal climate initiatives and supported fossil fuel development. Last week, the Trump administration revoked a scientific finding that legally underpinned US action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

While Trump has repeatedly described climate change as a "hoax," Governor Newsom has expanded California's green policies and maintained international climate cooperation. Newsom is widely considered a potential Democratic presidential contender for the 2028 election.

Economic and Environmental Benefits

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband emphasised the agreement's potential benefits for British businesses and consumers. "This Government's clean energy mission is about taking back control of our energy to cut bills, create jobs, and tackle the climate crisis," Miliband stated. "Strong international partnerships like today's announcement with the State of California strengthens opportunities for UK businesses and secures investment for our country."

Governor Newsom highlighted California's leadership in clean technology investment, noting that the partnership had already attracted nearly a billion dollars in clean tech investment from British company Octopus Energy. "California will continue showing the world how we can turn innovation and ambition into climate action," Newsom declared.

Business Opportunities and Nuclear Alternatives

The UK Department for Energy indicated the agreement would create new export opportunities, boost skilled job creation, and support British businesses expanding in international markets. Octopus Energy, which has already established operations on the US west coast, welcomed the partnership as an opportunity to bring smart energy technology to California.

Despite "open disagreements" with the Trump administration on renewable energy, the UK government has identified nuclear power as a key area of strategic alignment. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and President Trump signed a major nuclear power agreement in September, even as Trump continues to criticise British wind energy policies and advocate for expanded North Sea fossil fuel exploitation.

The UK-California clean energy partnership aims to ultimately reduce energy bills, enhance energy security by decreasing dependence on fossil fuel markets, protect natural environments, and strengthen resilience against climate change impacts across both economies.
