The company's main advantage is its integrated offering: it can install solar panels, supply electricity and gas, provide smart tariffs, buy back excess solar power, support EV charging, and fit low-carbon heating systems. This simplifies the transition to cleaner energy for homeowners. However, export rates matter—Octopus's flat Outgoing tariff pays 12p per kWh, while some rivals offer higher rates with conditions.
Octopus recommends batteries for evening electricity users, allowing daytime solar charging for nighttime use. Its cheap overnight tariff can top up batteries in winter when solar generation is low. The company uses microinverters with some packages, improving performance in mixed light or partial shade.
Octopus offers a 2-year HIES-backed guarantee and 5-year workmanship warranty, with 25-year panel warranties. It covers England and Wales, and installations typically occur 2–3 months after inquiry. JA Solar panels cost £177 each (up to 455W), with battery options including Tesla Powerwall 3, Fox EVO, and Enphase (5kWh, 10kWh, 13.5kWh).
A sample quote for a typical three-bedroom home estimates a nine-year payback period and over £14,000 savings after 25 years. Eligible homeowners may access subsidised installations via the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme in England and Wales, potentially at zero cost. Other funding includes the Warm Homes: Local Grant.
