Energy experts recommend that rural homeowners stock up on heating oil now to avoid a surge in prices from October, when temperatures begin to drop. Heating oil supplier Your RNG says September is one of the best times of the year to buy, as prices are typically lower before demand increases in the colder months.
Whether now is the right time to buy depends on current heating oil levels. If the tank is more than 50% full, homeowners have time to be selective and avoid panic buying. However, if it is lower than 25%, it is best to place an order now to avoid the risk of having no heating or hot water.
Market conditions and advice
In its online advice, Your RNG said: "In a typical year, the cheapest time to buy heating oil is often between June and September. That's because: Demand is lower, there are fewer emergency orders, there's more delivery availability. But 2026 isn't exactly a 'typical year'. Global market pressure means prices may not follow the usual seasonal trends as neatly as before."
The independent fuel distributor added: "As of September 2026, the best time to buy is now, before winter demand in November and December increases prices. It's also important to remember that heating oil prices react to global events rather than a predictable calendar, so waiting rarely pays off and running dry always costs more. If your tank is over half full, you have room to watch prices and order in a quieter week."
Checks before ordering
Before placing an order, the supplier recommends carrying out some basic checks, including making sure the heating oil tank is in good condition without any leaks, and that there are clear access routes for delivery drivers. Ordering in September also helps households avoid the risk of running low during bouts of cold weather, which can contribute to delivery delays. Having a full tank at the start of the winter season provides peace of mind that homes can be heated throughout the cold months without interruption.
