Free heated throws: who is eligible and how to get one

Octopus Energy and OVO are offering free heated throws and other items to help households across the UK stay warm this winter as temperatures drop in November.

Who can get a free heated throw

Octopus Energy said it is offering heated throws to the most vulnerable homes, with a limit of one electric heated throw per household so it can help as many people as possible. OVO is also providing alternatives for customers who might struggle to pay their heating bills.

How to apply

For Octopus Energy, applicants fill out an online form to check eligibility for the Octo Assist fund, with a response expected in about a week. The website says: "Applying is straightforward, and it all starts with filling out a quick budget form here. To figure out how best to help, we just need a clear picture of what's coming in and going out of your household."

OVO Energy requires customers to state their monthly available spend after paying bills, using an online budgeting tool on its website. The advice reads: "We won’t be able to offer everything to everyone – but we’re hoping to help as many people as possible. Our specialist teams will be available to speak to any of our customers who are worried about energy costs."

Cost of running a heated throw

While a heated throw will not directly reduce energy bills, it offers an alternative to switching on the heating. Heated throws cost around 2-4p per hour to run at their maximum setting, making them a cost-effective way to keep warm.
