Millions to Receive £299 Cost of Living Payment: Exact Dates Letters Drop Through Letterboxes Revealed
Exact date millions get £299 Cost of Living letters revealed

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed the precise date that millions of crucial letters will begin landing on doormats across the UK, signalling the arrival of the final £299 Cost of Living Payment.

This last instalment of the government's support package is set to provide a vital financial lifeline for struggling households battling soaring energy bills and food prices. The letters will serve as an official notification for those eligible to receive the tax-free cash directly into their bank accounts.

Who is eligible for the payment?

The payment is automatic for individuals receiving any of the following qualifying benefits during the specific assessment period:

  • Universal Credit
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit

It is essential to note that the payment is not taxable and will not affect the benefit cap or any existing benefit awards.

When will the letters arrive and payments be made?

According to the DWP, the notification letters will be sent out to eligible households from February 8, 2024. The department has stated that the vast majority of those entitled to the payment will receive it between February 6 and February 22, 2024.

For recipients of Tax Credits only and no other eligible benefits, the payment window is slightly later, running from February 16 to February 22, 2024. The payment reference will appear on bank statements as the recipient's National Insurance number followed by "DWP COL" or "HMRC COLS".

A critical boost for families

This final payment concludes the government's £900 support package for over eight million vulnerable households. Charities and financial advisors are urging everyone who believes they may be eligible to check their entitlement, particularly encouraging older people to check if they can claim Pension Credit, as this can open the door to additional support.

If you believe you meet the criteria but do not receive your payment by the deadline, a dedicated portal for reporting missing Cost of Living Payments will be available on the GOV.UK website from February 23, 2024.
