EDF Energy is launching a 'Sunday Saver' initiative offering customers up to 64 hours of free electricity this spring. The scheme rewards households for reducing their energy use during peak weekday hours, typically between 4pm and 7pm, when demand on the grid is highest.
Participants who successfully cut their peak-time consumption can claim free electricity on four Sundays: April 19 and 26, and May 3 and 10. The amount of free hours depends on how much they reduce usage, with a maximum of 16 hours per Sunday. Over the four-week period, this totals 64 hours of complimentary power.
To qualify, households must have a working smart meter that sends half-hourly readings and register by 5 April at 11.59pm. Common ways to reduce peak usage include running dishwashers overnight, avoiding tumble dryers in the evening, and charging electric vehicles outside peak times.
EDF claims the most dedicated participants could save around £96 annually on their energy bills. Joe Souto, Director of Retail at EDF, said: 'With the energy price cap coming down in April, Sunday Saver continues to give customers a simple, practical way to cut costs and save even more when they need it most.'
However, the scheme requires households to proactively adjust their energy habits, potentially reducing peak usage by up to 50%. This may be challenging for families with fixed evening routines, especially during colder months. Nonetheless, for those able to adapt, it offers a rare opportunity to lower bills without switching supplier.
