Coatbridge and Bellshill MP Frank McNally has welcomed the new Prime Minister’s commitment to put the cost of living at the heart of the government’s agenda, saying local families need to see change delivered “faster and with greater urgency.”
Following Andy Burnham’s first speech outside Downing Street, the PM pledged to give people “breathing space” through immediate action on the cost of living while setting out a longer-term plan to rebuild the country, improve public services and raise living standards.
Resonating with local communities
Mr McNally said the Prime Minister’s commitment to a government focused on improving everyday life and ensuring growth reaches every part of the country would resonate strongly with people across Coatbridge, Bellshill and the surrounding communities.
The MP added: "People in Coatbridge and Bellshill want a government that gets on with the job, delivers change more quickly and focuses relentlessly on the issues that matter most to working families.
“The cost of living remains the biggest pressure for households. That’s why I welcome the Prime Minister’s commitment to provide people with breathing space now, while also setting out a long-term plan to rebuild Britain, strengthen our economy and improve living standards.
“For too long, too many communities like ours have felt left behind. I welcome the clear commitment that growth and opportunity should reach every postcode, not just a fortunate few.
“As the local MP, I’ll continue working to ensure our community benefits from that renewed focus, whether that’s through more investment, better jobs, stronger public services or support to help families with the cost of living.”
Long-term plan
The Prime Minister has said his government will combine immediate measures to ease household pressures with a 10-year plan to create sustained economic growth, help more young people into work, build more homes and deliver what he described as a more preventative approach to government.
