Plug-in hybrid SUVs offer a blend of electric efficiency for daily drives and petrol convenience for longer trips. We tested three popular models: the affordable BYD Seal U DM-i, the long-range Omoda 9, and the spacious Volkswagen Tayron.
On value, the BYD Seal U DM-i starts at £33,315, undercutting the Volkswagen Tayron by £10,000 and the Omoda 9 by over £11,000. Despite the low price, it comes with premium features like a panoramic sunroof and heated/cooled seats. We called it 'Britain's best value new car'.
For electric range, the Omoda 9 leads with a claimed 93 miles from its 34kWh battery, plus a combined range of over 700 miles. It also boasts the fastest DC charging at 80kW. The Volkswagen Tayron offers 75 miles of electric range, while the BYD Seal U DM-i provides up to 78 miles with its larger 26.6kWh battery.
In terms of ride comfort, the Volkswagen Tayron impressed with its adaptive dampers and composed handling. The BYD Seal U DM-i felt less polished, with a 'mixed bag' ride. The Omoda 9 disappointed, with fidgety suspension and grabby brakes.
Overall, the BYD Seal U DM-i wins on value, the Omoda 9 on electric range, and the Volkswagen Tayron on ride quality. Families have more choice than ever in 2025.
