Baking French toast in the oven is easier than frying

French toast can be prepared more easily by baking it in the oven instead of frying it on the hob, a method shared by Michelle, founder of Now Cook This. The technique avoids the hassle of standing over a frying pan, prevents oil from splashing across kitchen surfaces, and ensures the bread cooks evenly without a burnt exterior or soggy centre.

Why oven baking beats frying

Michelle said: "The first time I made French toast in the oven, I couldn't believe how easy and delicious it was. It's been my go-to ever since. And I'd be willing to bet that, once you try it, it'll become yours too!"

Many people do not realise that French toast can be baked, which removes the need to constantly flip the bread by the hob. This method allows a substantial batch to be cooked at once without constant supervision, giving time to make a coffee or relax while it cooks.

Even cooking and less mess

Baking in the oven guarantees that every section of the bread is cooked evenly, producing a crisp finish without burning or leaving the centre uncooked. It also avoids the mess of a splattered hob and the chore of scrubbing a scorched frying pan afterwards.

How to make oven-baked French toast

You will need eight slices of brioche bread, four large eggs, 240ml of whole milk, one teaspoon of vanilla extract, half a teaspoon of cinnamon, a pinch of salt (about a quarter teaspoon), butter (optional), maple syrup (optional), and cooking spray.

Preheat the oven to 220°C (200°C for fan ovens or Gas Mark 7), then liberally coat a large sheet pan tray with cooking spray. Break the eggs into a medium-sized bowl, add the milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt, and whisk until fully combined.

Pour the egg mixture into the tray and lay the bread slices in a single layer on top. Allow the bread to sit for one minute to soak up the mixture, then turn it over. Leave for a few minutes until all the egg batter has been completely absorbed.

Place the tray in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes until the French toast is crispy and golden. Serve straight away from the oven, adding butter, maple syrup, or any other toppings as desired.
