CV-Library, Britain's largest independent job site, has released data identifying the 10 most in-demand job sectors in the UK. IT positions top the list, with roles such as Software Engineer attracting the highest number of applications per vacancy and commanding an average salary of £61,000.
Administrative roles rank second, with Receptionist positions proving most sought-after, offering typical earnings of £30,800. These roles are valued for their accessibility, job security, and transferable skills across various industries.
Other popular sectors include Hospitality and Hotel jobs, which attract candidates despite modest pay, suggesting that flexible hours and collaborative environments are prioritised over salary. Arts and Graphic Design also see fierce competition, with Graphic Designer roles being the most applied-for, indicating strong interest in creative careers.
Katie Emerton, recruitment expert at CV-Library, commented: 'These roles attract such high application numbers because they tick a lot of boxes for today's jobseekers: flexibility, stability and clear progression.' She added that roles like Software Engineer and Marketing Executive offer future-proof skills, while positions like Receptionist and Cleaner appeal due to availability and low entry barriers.
For aspiring Software Engineers, Emerton emphasised that a degree is no longer essential; instead, candidates should showcase practical projects, such as apps or websites, and demonstrate adaptability to new technologies like AI. She also shared five tips for job seekers, including using active, measurable language in applications to highlight impact.
