Paid to Live in a Welsh Castle: £25,000 Role Open

The National Trust Cymru is seeking a facilities co-ordinator for Penrhyn Castle near Bangor, Gwynedd, offering a salary of £24,850 for a 33.75-hour week and a two-bedroom apartment within the 19th-century, Grade I listed castle. The role also covers Plas Newydd, another Grade I listed estate on the Isle of Anglesey.

Job Responsibilities and Lifestyle

Duties include assisting with maintenance, security, and compliance at both properties, which attract over 300,000 visitors annually. The successful candidate will live on-site, with National Trust Cymru describing the role as 'no ordinary 9 to 5'. A spokesperson said: 'What sets this role apart is the lifestyle that comes with it. With accommodation provided on site, the successful candidate won't just work at Penrhyn Castle – they will live there too.'

The role involves working Sunday to Wednesday plus a half-day Thursday, with a 'substantial' pension scheme and up to 32 days holiday per year. The post-holder will also serve as a key representative alongside two colleagues to ensure security.

Film Location and Unique Features

Penrhyn Castle has become a popular filming location for HBO's Game of Thrones and Netflix's House of Guinness, adding film crew coordination to the job's growing demands. The castle features 204 rooms, 70 roofs, a Canaletto painting, a railway museum, and a large underground reservoir in its gardens.

National Trust Cymru emphasized the need for 'resilience, organisation and a practical mindset', as the position requires managing multiple IT systems and handling 'unexpected challenges' associated with historic buildings.

Applications close on Sunday, July 5. For more details, visit the National Trust Cymru website.
