Marcus Rashford has reportedly explored the possibility of returning to the Manchester United first-team squad as his loan spell at Barcelona draws to a close. The 28-year-old forward faces an uncertain future ahead of the summer transfer window, having spent the last 18 months on loan away from Old Trafford.
Rashford's Loan at Barcelona
The England international scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists during his loan stint at Barcelona last season. The La Liga giants had the option to sign Rashford permanently for £26 million, but they have chosen not to activate that clause. This decision came after Barcelona opted to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for £69 million, with both players operating in similar positions.
Uncertain Future
As a result, there is uncertainty about where Rashford will play next season. Reports suggest Barcelona could still be open to another loan deal. However, a fresh report from The Sun claims that Rashford has put a plan in motion for a potential return to United. He has approached members of the United first-team squad about a comeback and received “positive feedback.”
Carrick's Involvement
It has also been reported that United boss Michael Carrick has been in contact with Rashford amid the ongoing speculation. Rashford has not made a first-team appearance for United since December 2024, having fallen out of favor under former head coach Ruben Amorim, who left the club in January 2025.
Carrick was appointed United's permanent manager last month and now faces a decision on whether to include Rashford in his plans for the upcoming season. In April, Carrick was asked about the prospect of Rashford returning and did not rule it out. “I just think there's decisions to be made in time on certain things and obviously Marcus is in that situation,” Carrick said. “But at this point in time, nothing's been decided.”
World Cup Preparations
Rashford is currently with the England squad in the United States as they prepare for their first World Cup match against Croatia on Wednesday. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Rashford under Carrick's leadership and whether he has a chance of making a return to the United squad.
