Barry Maguire made his first appearance in a Hamilton Accies jersey for 10 months on Saturday, playing 35 minutes in a 2-2 pre-season draw with Raith Rovers at Stark's Park. The midfielder, who last played competitively in August 2025, was substituted early as a precaution due to his lengthy layoff.
Maguire's Return and Injury History
Maguire, formerly of Motherwell and Hamilton's highest-paid player last season, suffered a groin tear that sidelined him since a 3-2 defeat to Edinburgh City in the KDM Evolution Trophy on August 27, 2025. Manager Darian MacKinnon confirmed the substitution was precautionary: 'Baz we are just protecting. It was his first game in about eight months or so.'
Match Details: Hamilton's Strong Start
Hamilton raced into a 2-0 lead within the first 22 minutes, with new signings Dom Thomas and Kalvin Orsi scoring. However, Raith Rovers fought back in the second half, with Lewis Vaughan netting twice in seven minutes late on to secure a draw. MacKinnon praised the team's early performance: 'It was a strong start from us. Raith are a good side and penned us in at times but I thought when we won the ball, especially in the first half and broke, we looked a real threat.'
Pre-Season Priorities and Player Fitness
MacKinnon emphasized that pre-season results are secondary to fitness and workrate. 'Nobody cares about results in pre-season, it doesn't mean anything. It was just about getting minutes in the boys and it was a good days' work.' He singled out Kalvin Orsi for praise: 'I thought Kalvin Orsi was immense. His running power, his willingness to work and his quality as well was great. But it is only pre-season, it is about getting through unscathed.'
New signing Taylor Sutherland also went off early due to hamstring tightness. MacKinnon explained: 'Taylor felt a bit of tightness in his hamstring and I told everyone if they feel anything, don't be playing through it. Identify it early and get off.'
Upcoming Fixtures and New Signings
Hamilton's next friendly is against Linlithgow Rose on Tuesday at Prestonfield, kick-off 7:45pm. The club also announced the permanent signings of midfielder Gregor Crookston and defender Kai Smutek on two-year deals.
