The Handyman Pub and Brewery, located in the former Handyman Supermarket on Smithdown Road, opened in August 2017. Owner Kevin McArthur, 44, originally from Glasgow but now living in Gateacre, has worked at the pub since its inception. The pub retains the iconic yellow frontage with a horse's head, preserving the building's history. Before becoming a DIY shop, the building was the Sefton Park Picture Drome cinema in the 1920s. The former projection booth has been converted into a mezzanine-floor snug seating around 20 people.
On-Site Brewery and Customer Base
The Handyman operates as a nano brewery, brewing its own beer on-site. Best-sellers include the Handyman Pale and Handyman IPA, though Guinness also sells well. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the brewery delivered beer locally, attracting new customers who discovered craft ales. Since reopening, the pub has grown busier.
Community and Events
The pub serves as the main stage for the Smithdown Festival, hosting gigs by DJs like Krafty Kuts and local bands. The space can be split into a front pub area and a back room for football, films, or live music. Notable guests include Craig Charles and Seamus Coleman with his family.
Atmosphere and Philosophy
McArthur describes the pub as a friendly place where customers can walk in alone and leave with 20 friends. He emphasizes the importance of friendly staff and quality drinks, particularly line cleaning to ensure perfect pints. The pub runs a 'no idiots' policy to maintain a welcoming environment.
Supporting Local Pubs
McArthur suggests that people consider spending less on supermarket alcohol and instead support local pubs by having a couple of drinks out. He also encourages liking and sharing social media posts as a free way to support the pub.
