Hamilton Academical has announced that their transfer bans from FIFA and the SPFL have been lifted, clearing the way for new player registrations ahead of the 2026/27 season. The League One club faced a season-long SPFL transfer embargo due to rule breaches under previous ownership, and an international signing ban from FIFA was reported last month by Lanarkshire Live Sport.
Background of the Bans
The SPFL embargo stemmed from a host of rule violations under the club's former management. The FIFA ban coincided with the FIFA Ethics Committee investigating fraud claims from 2023, involving alleged forged documents that led to a 15-point deduction for Accies at the end of the 2024/25 season, resulting in relegation from the Championship. These claims remain under investigation.
Two former Hamilton employees gave statements to Police Scotland last year, and a 59-year-old was arrested but released without charge in December 2025 due to lack of evidence. A forensic handwriting report has since been submitted to Police Scotland and FIFA.
New Ownership and Resolution
Under new owner Rob Edwards and his Morley Sports Management group, the club has resolved both bans. A club statement said: "The club is pleased to confirm that the transfer embargo imposed by the SPFL and the SFA, relating to previous rule breaches, has now been formally lifted. We can also confirm that the embargo imposed by FIFA, which related to compliance matters arising from previous ownership, has been fully rectified and the sanction has now been removed."
The statement added: "This marks an important step forward for the club as we continue to build for the future both on and off the pitch. We would like to place on record our thanks to the SPFL and the SFA for their cooperation and assistance throughout this process. Most importantly, we would like to thank our supporters for their patience, loyalty and continued backing during this period."
Impact on Squad
The lifted bans allow Accies to complete new signings, including the return of striker Andy Ryan, who won the League of Ireland with Larne last season. However, star striker Oli Shaw departed earlier today for Championship side Dunfermline Athletic.
